Free and Cheap Theater, Opera, Music, Arts for Students in Los Angeles

This page is under development, but it will include links to free, half-price and discount tickets to live theater, opera, music, and other stage performances in the greater Los Angeles area, available and suitable especially for students.

Goldstar Events operates a zip-code based e-mailing list offering main-event tickets at half-off or better, including seating at downtown's famed Music Center venues.  Highly reliable and informative, a top recommendation.

Your Los Angeles Music Center has four important venues, each offering different artistic specialties (and different ways of getting into them on a student's budget):

The Ahmanson Theater  features mostly newer versions of classic musical theater, though that is not always the case.  Student rush tickets are available for only $12.00 at this writing, and more information is available at their discounted tickets site

The Mark Taper Forum offers newer and less traditional plays in a less traditional setting, and usually the plays have an interesting social or political and historical bent to them.  Student rush tickets are available for only $12.00 at this writing, student subscriptions are available at the same rate, and more information is available at this site.

Dorothy Chandler Pavillion is home to The Los Angeles Opera, which produces about a dozen spectaculars every year in this chandelier-graced palace, not to mention other amazing operatic programming that takes place in between.  Discount tickets ARE available for college and high school students! (And yes, you really DO have to dress up for the opera!)  I was unable to get specific information about what that would BE, so try calling 1(888) OPERA-LA, and maybe YOU can find out!

Walt Disniey Concert Hall at the Music Center, the new architectural and accoustic masterpiece designed by Frank Gehry, is home to both the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Los Angeles Master Chorale.  Their policy is that full-time high school and college students with valid student identification (showing current enrollment) date may purchase $10 rush tickets beginning two hours prior to Philharmonic concerts and Celebrity Recitals, subject to availability. They advise that you call (323) 850-2000 for availability the day of the concert. HOWEVER ... I am aware that there are discounted seats BEHIND the orchestra available up to two weeks in advance of the concert, and I would ask about those, too.
